What Is BaZi?
The Four Pillars of Destiny

BaZi literally translates to "Eight Characters" (八 = eight, 字 = characters). These eight characters are derived from your birth year, month, day, and hour — each contributing two characters: one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch. Together, they form the Four Pillars of Destiny (年柱 Year, 月柱 Month, 日柱 Day, 時柱 Hour).

Unlike Western astrology, which focuses primarily on the position of the sun, BaZi considers a much broader cosmic picture. It integrates the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), the Ten Gods, Yin-Yang theory, and the 60-year sexagenary cycle to create a comprehensive blueprint of your destiny.

A skilled BaZi practitioner can read this blueprint to reveal insights about your personality strengths and weaknesses, optimal career directions, wealth potential, relationship compatibility, health tendencies, and the timing of major life events.

At the heart of BaZi lies the theory of the Five Elements (五行 — Wu Xing): Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. These elements are not literal substances but represent dynamic energetic forces that interact, support, and control one another.

Each of the ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches is associated with one of the Five Elements and a polarity (Yin or Yang). The balance and interaction of these elements in your chart determine your strengths, weaknesses, and life themes.

The Day Master (日主 — Ri Zhu) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents your core self — your fundamental nature, personality, and how you relate to the world. Think of it as the protagonist of your life story; every other element in the chart exists in relation to the Day Master.

There are ten possible Day Masters, each corresponding to one of the ten Heavenly Stems: Jia (甲) and Yi (乙) are Wood; Bing (丙) and Ding (丁) are Fire; Wu (戊) and Ji (己) are Earth; Geng (庚) and Xin (辛) are Metal; Ren (壬) and Gui (癸) are Water.

Understanding your Day Master is the first step in any BaZi analysis. Once you know your Day Master element, you can determine whether your chart is strong or weak, and which elements are favorable (helpful) versus unfavorable (challenging) for you.

The Ten Gods (十神 — Shi Shen) are relationships between the Day Master and every other element in the chart. They reveal how you experience different areas of life: wealth, authority, creativity, relationships, and personal growth.

Each stem and branch in your chart is interpreted through the lens of the Ten Gods. For example, elements that the Day Master controls represent Wealth; elements that control the Day Master represent Authority or Pressure; elements that the Day Master produces represent Expression or Creativity; and elements that produce the Day Master represent Resources and Support.

While your natal chart (命盘 — Ming Pan) represents your fixed destiny blueprint, life is not static. The Luck Pillars (大运 — Da Yun) represent the changing cosmic energies that influence your life in ten-year cycles.

Each Luck Pillar consists of one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch, just like the natal pillars. These pillars interact with your natal chart, activating different aspects of your destiny at different times. A favorable Luck Pillar can bring career breakthroughs, financial gains, or relationship opportunities. An unfavorable pillar might bring challenges that test your resilience.

Understanding your Luck Pillars helps you make better decisions about timing. When you know that a wealth-supporting pillar is approaching, you can prepare to seize opportunities. When a challenging pillar is ahead, you can exercise caution and focus on stability.
