BaZi, literally 'Eight Characters,' is a Chinese metaphysical system that analyzes a person's destiny based on their birth date and time. The eight characters represent four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — the Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars — which together form your cosmic blueprint.

BaZi is a system of pattern recognition, not fortune-telling. Its accuracy depends on the quality of the birth data (especially the correct solar term for the month pillar) and the interpreter's skill. Many people find BaZi remarkably accurate in describing personality traits, life themes, and timing of significant events.

You need your exact birth date (year, month, day) and birth time (hour and minute). For maximum accuracy, you should also know your birth longitude, as BaZi traditionally uses true solar time rather than standard clock time. Our calculator handles the solar time conversion automatically.

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It represents your core self, personality, and identity. There are ten possible Day Masters, each associated with one of the Five Elements. Understanding your Day Master is the foundation of all BaZi analysis.

The Five Elements (五行 — Wu Xing) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each represents a dynamic energetic force rather than a literal substance. The balance of these elements in your chart reveals your strengths, weaknesses, and optimal life directions.

A strong Day Master has abundant support from other elements in the chart and can handle wealth and authority elements without being overwhelmed. A weak Day Master lacks support and benefits from nurturing elements. A balanced Day Master has moderate support. Neither strong nor weak is inherently better — each has its own path to success.

Luck Pillars are ten-year cycles that show the changing cosmic energies influencing your life. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. Favorable Luck Pillars can bring opportunities, while challenging pillars require caution. Understanding your Luck Pillars helps with timing important decisions.

BaZi does not predict the future with certainty. It reveals tendencies, patterns, and probabilities based on cosmic energies. Think of it as a weather forecast for your life — it tells you when conditions are favorable for certain activities and when to prepare for storms. Your free will and choices always play a role.

The Ten Gods represent relationships between your Day Master and other elements in the chart. They include Direct Wealth, Indirect Wealth, Direct Officer, Seven Killings, Eating God, Hurting Officer, Direct Resource, Indirect Resource, Companion, and Rob Wealth. Each reveals different aspects of your life experience.

Western astrology focuses on the positions of planets and the sun at birth. BaZi uses the Chinese calendar's Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, which are based on the Five Elements and Yin-Yang theory. Heavenly Stems (天干 — Tian Gan) are ten cosmic energies: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. Traditional BaZi uses the solar calendar (based on solar terms / 节气) for the Month Pillar, not the lunar calendar. The month changes at solar term boundaries (e.g., Li Chun for the start of the year), not on the first day of the lunar month. There is no such thing as a 'bad' BaZi chart — only charts with different challenges and gifts. BaZi is not about judgment; it's about understanding. Even charts with many clashes and penalties often belong to highly successful people who have learned to navigate challenges. Awareness is the first step to improvement.

Branch Interactions include Six Combinations (六合), Three Combinations (三合), Six Clashes (六冲), and various penalties (刑) and damages (害). These describe how the Earthly Branches interact, creating alliances, conflicts, or transformative energies in your chart.

When you know your Useful God, you can make lifestyle choices, career decisions, and environmental adjustments that support your destiny.

Your natal chart (Four Pillars) never changes — it is fixed at birth. However, your Luck Pillars change every ten years, and annual influences (流年) change every year. Many people consult their chart before major decisions: career changes, investments, marriage, or relocation. Checking annually at Chinese New Year is a common practice.
